TRAVEL / SIFNOS

Sifnos, Greece

This small, perfectly formed island is the kind of place you never want to leave. It's authentic beauty is a photographers dream. White washed buildings and blue shutters are scattered across the island. And the coastline is dotted with quiet beaches. The main town, Apollonia, is a maze of beautiful, winding streets. An evening spent here sampling the local cuisine and enjoying traditional drinks (Ouzo) cannot be recommended enough. The port town of Kamares is also worth checking out. The row of outdoor dining areas along the waterfront are the perfect place to take to a break from the sunshine. One of the restaurants serves excellent ice cream (The Ferrero Rocher one is really good!)

The reason for my trip to Sifnos was a wedding. My friends got married at the Chrysopigi Church (google it) in June. The traditional Greek ceremony was an experience to say the least - there was a lot of rice throwing involved. I had never been to a wedding before, so every aspect was a novelty to me. The beautiful setting and incredible attention to detail has set the bar VERY high.

My friend and I stayed at Fassolou Studios. Our traditional-style apartment had sea views and was a short walk from Faros. We spent most of our trip in this seaside village, relaxing on the beach, going for a swim and eating out at different restaurants.

Sifnos is definitely a place I would happily return to. But one thing I would have done differently would have been to bring mosquito repellent!
